about
This track was recorded at Unwound Studios, Greenwich in May 2022, a few short weeks after American gothic-punks Bambara had completed their UK and Europe tour.
Bambara hit us at the right time. These were the first shows from a touring band post-restrictions, and covid was still causing plenty of gig cancellations. I first saw Bambara on a Friday night at Bedford Esquires.
It was a show that blew me away within about 90 seconds of their opening song "Miracle".
You're trying to get a feel for the band, before Reid bursts into "Maybe she sliiiiiiiiippppppps!" It is a shocking moment.
They were so good that I then drove all the way down to the Boiler Room in Guildford the next evening. And then to Nottingham. And London. And Birmingham. And Cambridge. And Oxford.
Insanely fun times with lots of tour stories and lots of new friends made. Bambara really left an impression on me.
The energy in their live shows means that they're on stage in a parallel world to their recorded music. I can't recommend them highly enough. The deeper you dive, the more you'll get out of Bambara.
When the twist comes in Miracle, when the beat drops on Jose Tries To Leave, when the drums kick in for Monument, when you realize what the lyrics are about...
So, consider our cover of All The Ugly Things as a tribute to a band that does it right. We play in totally different styles, and in any case a decent cover song shouldn't be a direct copy of another band (you can listen to Ed Sheeran for that). So we deconstructed Bambara's original and went at it from scratch, from our synth-punk POV. It was great fun for us, to the extent that we're often opening our sets with it.
Please support Bambara by following them on all the usual platforms, and buy a ticket to their next show in your area!
